If you’re looking at plasma cutter hire in NZ, chances are you’ve got one simple problem: you need to cut some steel. It might be a trailer repair, a farm job, some brackets, plate steel, box section, or just a few workshop jobs in the shed. The trouble is, hiring a plasma cutter is not always the cheapest or easiest answer—especially for smaller jobs.

In a lot of cases, plasma cutter rental only makes sense if you need a bigger machine for one short industrial job. If you’re only trying to cut a few bits of steel over a weekend, the cost of hire, consumables and general mucking around can get surprisingly close to the cost of owning a basic plasma cutter yourself.

There’s also another thing people often miss: the plasma cutter is only part of the setup. To get decent results, you still need enough power, a compressor big enough to keep up, dry air, good consumables, and at least a basic idea of how to use the machine. Before You Hire Anything, Work Out What You’re Actually Trying to Cut

Before you spend money on plasma cutter hire, the first thing to work out is what you’re actually trying to cut and how thick it is. That sounds obvious, but it changes everything. There’s a big difference between trimming a few bits of 3 mm angle iron in the shed and trying to cut a length of 10 mm or 12 mm plate cleanly.

In my experience, if you’re cutting 6 mm steel or under, you can get away with a basic plasma cutter once you’ve learned how to use it properly. That doesn’t mean it will be perfect the first time you pull the trigger, but it does mean you don’t necessarily need a big expensive machine just to get the job done. For a lot of trailer repairs, brackets, tabs and general workshop jobs, a smaller plasma cutter is often enough.

That said, if you’re only cutting 3 mm or 4 mm steel and you don’t have much to do, I’d seriously look at using an angle grinder instead. It’s slower, noisier and not as nice to use, but for a couple of simple cuts it can still be the quicker and cheaper option. If you’re only trying to cut a few bits of flat bar or shorten a piece of angle, it may not be worth the hassle of hiring a plasma cutter at all.

Where a plasma cutter starts to make more sense is when you want to cut shapes, curves, brackets, contours or awkward bits of steel that are a pain to do neatly with a grinder. That’s where plasma cutting is much quicker and much easier once you know what you’re doing. For thinner material—say 3 mm steel plate—it’s also a much easier place to learn, because you can see what the machine is doing and get a feel for travel speed, torch angle and cut quality without fighting the machine the whole time.

The part a lot of people don’t think about is that even if you hire a branded plasma cutter, you still have to learn how to use it first. It’s not like pointing a torch at a bit of steel and having it magically fall in half. There’s a learning curve. You need to work out how fast to move, how close to hold the torch, what a good cut sounds like, and what happens when you go too slow or too fast.

If you’re paying for a hired machine while you’re learning, you can easily burn through three or four hours just getting your head around the basics—and if you’re learning on thicker steel, you can chew through consumables pretty quickly as well.

Can Your Workshop Actually Run a Plasma Cutter Properly?

One thing a lot of people miss when looking at plasma cutter hire is that the machine itself is only half the story. Even if you hire a decent plasma cutter, your workshop still has to be able to run it properly. If your power supply is marginal, your compressor is too small, or your air is wet, the machine can cut badly no matter how good it is.

For most home workshop jobs, the biggest plasma cutter you’re likely to hire is around 60 amps. Once you get much bigger than that, you start getting into a different class of machine altogether. Bigger industrial plasma cutters can be 80, 100 amps and beyond, but they’re a different kettle of fish. They’re not really aimed at the average home workshop, and once you’re getting into that sort of size you’re often looking at a workshop with three-phase power, not just a normal shed or garage setup.

Even with a 40A or 50A plasma cutter, you still need to think about power properly. In my opinion, 15 amps is the bare minimum, but if you’re running a 50A plasma cutter and a semi-decent compressor at the same time, I’d be much happier with something more like 30 amps available. The reason is simple: the compressor doesn’t just run once and stop. It keeps cycling while you’re cutting, especially on longer cuts, and if the plasma cutter and compressor both kick in together, a marginal setup can trip out in a hurry.

The compressor matters just as much as the cutter. A plasma cutter uses compressed air to create the arc and blow the molten metal away, so if you don’t have enough air behind it, the machine is never going to cut the way it should. As a rough rule of thumb, I’d want a compressor that’s big enough to spray paint a car without running out of puff if I was planning to run a 50 amp plasma cutter properly.

Some hire companies do have plasma cutters with a built-in compressor, and those can be handy because they remove one part of the equation. They’re usually in the 40A to under-50A range, and for lighter work they can be perfectly usable. I’ve got a 40 amp unit with a built-in compressor myself, and for shorter cuts it works fine. You can still cut full lengths of 4 or 5 mm steel with it, but you have to be realistic—you may need to give the machine a break and let it catch up now and then.

Where people really come unstuck is with air quality and air volume. If you don’t have enough air, the cut quality turns to rubbish. If the air is too wet, the cut quality turns to rubbish. If the air is wet and the compressor can’t keep up, you can chew through consumables like no tomorrow.

That’s one of the reasons I’m always banging on about using the right consumables for the right torch as well. A machine that’s already struggling with poor air and poor setup won’t behave any better if the tips and electrodes are wrong or worn out.

Before you spend money on hiring a plasma cutter, ask yourself a few simple questions:

  • Do I have a compressor big enough to keep up with the machine?
  • Is my power supply up to it, or am I trying to run everything off a marginal setup?
  • Do I have clean, dry air, or am I feeding the torch wet rubbish?
  • Am I hiring a machine that suits my workshop, or am I trying to run something bigger than my shed can realistically handle?

Because at the end of the day, hiring a plasma cutter doesn’t magically solve the rest of the setup. If your workshop can’t feed it the power and air it needs, you’re paying hire rates to fight a losing battle.

What Plasma Cutter Hire Really Costs Once You Add It All Up

On paper, plasma cutter hire can look straightforward enough. You ring a hire company, book a machine, pick it up, do your cutting, take it back. In reality, the cost can add up a lot faster than most people expect—especially if you only need a machine for a few days and you’re still learning how to use it.

From what I’ve seen, you’re generally looking at a minimum of about $100 a day to hire a plasma cutter, and that’s before you even start talking about consumables. Once you move into branded machines, the hire rates can climb again, and the consumables certainly don’t get any cheaper. A lot of hire companies stock the bigger-name machines because they want gear that’s tough, reliable and built to survive being sent out to all sorts of customers. Fair enough—but it also means you’re hiring from the more expensive end of the market, not the cheap hobby end.

Consumables are where the cost can really start to sting if you don’t know what you’re doing. On a branded hire machine, a tip and electrode set can easily cost around $20 a set by the time you buy them through the hire company. If you’re experienced and the machine is set up properly, that’s one thing. But if you’re still learning, it’s very easy to burn through a set in a matter of minutes.

That doesn’t mean plasma cutting is some scary black art. It isn’t. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a brilliant tool and a lot of fun to use. But I do think people need to be realistic. There’s a bit of practice involved, and that practice costs money when the machine and consumables are both on the clock.

The other thing worth remembering is that hire companies don’t generally rent out the cheap end of the market. They’re not in the business of sending out fragile budget machines and hoping for the best. They want machines that can handle abuse, keep going out on hire, and survive customers who may never have used a plasma cutter before. That’s why the hire market and the cheap machine market are two very different things.

If you only need a plasma cutter for three or four days, and you’re paying roughly $100 a day plus consumables, you can very quickly get to the point where buying a cheap machine starts to make more sense. You can still buy entry-level plasma cutters for somewhere around the $700 mark, and sometimes cheaper depending on what’s available second-hand or on Trade Me.

If you’re only doing trailer repairs, brackets, farm jobs or occasional workshop use, that’s a very different conversation from buying a machine for a fabrication business. And cheap machines aren’t always the disposable rubbish people assume they are. I’ve had plenty of them over the years, and one of the first cheap plasma cutters I ever bought is now about 10 years old and still going perfectly fine.

So when you add it all up, the real cost of plasma cutter hire is not just the daily rate on the website. It’s:

  • the daily hire cost
  • the consumables you burn through while learning
  • the higher price of branded hire consumables
  • the fact that hire companies usually stock the expensive end of the market
  • and the simple reality that three or four days of hire can start getting very close to the cost of owning a basic machine yourself

For a one-off industrial job, hire can still make perfect sense. But for a lot of smaller workshop jobs, it’s worth doing the maths properly before you assume rental is the cheaper option.

Wouldn’t It Make More Sense to Buy a Cheap Plasma Cutter Instead of Hiring One?

For a lot of home workshops and light commercial workshops, I think this is the real question. If you’re only looking at plasma cutter hire because you’ve got a trailer repair, some brackets to make, or a few workshop jobs to get through, it’s worth asking whether you’d be better off just buying a cheap plasma cutter and keeping it.

Most of the cheaper machines people buy for home use are in the 40A to 60A single-phase range, and that’s the key point—single phase. Most sheds, home workshops and light commercial workshops don’t have three-phase power, so whether the sticker on the machine says 60A, 70A or even 80A, the practical reality is that you’re usually in the 50–60 amp world anyway.

Where a cheap plasma cutter really starts to shine is on 3 mm to 5 mm steel. That, to me, is the sweet spot. At 3 mm steel, you can start learning very quickly. You can practice straight cuts, then move into brackets, curves and shaped cuts, and before long you’re cutting out your own name in steel just because you can. If you’ve come from an angle grinder, that’s the bit that feels really cool—suddenly you’re not just slicing straight lines, you’re actually shaping steel.

At 5 mm, a decent cheap plasma cutter is still very useful and still very enjoyable to use. That’s about the range where I think these machines are brilliant for workshop jobs. They’re quick, relatively quiet compared to grinding, and they let you do things that are a pain in the backside with a grinder. For trailer repairs, brackets, tabs, patches and general fabrication, a cheap 50A or 60A machine can do a lot of useful work every day of the week.

Where people get caught out is when they start watching YouTube videos of machines slicing through 10 mm, 12 mm or 20 mm steel like it’s a CNC table in a factory. On paper, yes, a machine might “cut” that sort of thickness. In the real world, freehand cutting is a different story. You might be able to sever 10 mm steel, but that doesn’t mean you’re producing clean, accurate pieces you’d actually want to use as templates or fabrication parts.

If you’re trying to work out what torch you’ve got on one of those cheaper CUT40/CUT50 style machines, have a look at the common PT31 / LG40, SG51, AG60 and P80 consumables pages first. That’s usually the easiest way to work out what machine you’ve really got and what parts it actually uses.

That’s why I think buying a cheap plasma cutter can make a lot more sense than hiring one if your work is mainly in that 3 mm to 5 mm range and you’ve already got the workshop setup to run it. If that’s the sort of steel you normally deal with, a basic machine can be one of the handiest tools in the shed. You’re not paying hire rates while you learn, you’re not racing the clock to get the machine back, and once you’ve bought it, it’s there whenever you need it.

When Hiring a Plasma Cutter Still Makes Sense

Even though I’ve spent most of this article talking about why plasma cutter hire often doesn’t stack up for small workshop jobs, there are still situations where hiring one makes perfect sense. It just tends to be at the other end of the market.

If you’re talking about heavy commercial or industrial cutting, you’re in a completely different world from the average home workshop or farm shed. Once you move beyond the normal single-phase 40A to 60A machines, you’re getting into bigger plasma cutters, bigger compressors, heavier power requirements, larger consumables, and much bigger costs all round.

The moment you start talking about three-phase power, you’re usually talking about a workshop that’s already set up for serious fabrication, engineering or industrial work. You’re not just plugging a machine into the wall in the garage and having a play on a Saturday afternoon. You’re dealing with larger machines, more air demand, heavier cabling, bigger compressors, and a whole different level of cost if you decide to buy one.

That’s where hiring can still make sense. If you’ve got a one-off industrial job, or a job that genuinely needs a larger plasma cutter than you’d ever normally own, then hiring can be a sensible option. Maybe you need to cut heavy plate, do a bigger demolition job, or tackle something well outside the comfort zone of a normal single-phase workshop machine.

The thing is, most people looking at plasma cutter hire aren’t actually in that world. If you’re on a proper industrial setup with three-phase power, a huge compressor and regular heavy steel work, the chances are you already own a plasma cutter—or you’re at least working in a business where owning one makes sense.

So yes, plasma cutter hire still makes sense—but mainly when you genuinely need a bigger industrial machine for a one-off job and you don’t want to own all the expensive gear that goes with it. For the average workshop job, though, that’s usually not the world you’re in.

Used or Surplus Plasma Cutters

One other thing worth mentioning is that I do own a lot of plasma cutters myself. The main reason is simple: I review plasma cutters on YouTube, so over the years I’ve ended up with more than my fair share of them.

Some of them are second-hand, some are older machines I’ve tested and kept, and sometimes I’ve got brand new ones still sitting in the box if I’ve ended up with duplicates. In a lot of cases, a machine might only have been used for 10 minutes for a review, or maybe less than an hour in total, because once I’ve tested it I generally go back to using the original plasma cutter I bought about 10 years ago, which is still the one I use the most.

Most of the plasma cutters I have are under 60 amps, and they’re the sort of machines that suit a home workshop or light commercial workshop rather than heavy industrial work. Some are pilot arc, some are scratch start, and because most of them are built for the US market, they’re generally multi-voltage machines as well — usually 110/240V or 110/220V.

For a lot of home workshop users, a cheap 40A to 60A single-phase plasma cutter will handle the sort of work they actually do far better than they might expect. So before you book a hire machine, it’s worth asking a simple question:
