When I bought my first plasma cutter, I honestly thought I’d cracked the code.
Walk into the shop.
Hand over a stack of cash.
Walk out with a magic metal-cutting box.
Job done.
Didn’t matter what was inside it.
Didn’t matter how it started.
Didn’t matter what torch it had.
If it cut steel, that was good enough.
That right there was mistake number one.
I paid about nine hundred bucks for that first machine.
At the time that felt brutal.
These days you can buy a better machine for a third of that.
And here’s the real kick in the guts… Most of the cheap machines now have pilot arc.
Mine didn’t.
Mine was scratch start.
Did I know that?
Nope.
Did I even know scratch start was a thing?
Also nope.
I didn’t know there were different ways plasma cutters even start.
I just assumed you pulled the trigger and sparks came out.

The Moment It All Went Sideways
Few months later I’m under my car trying to chop an exhaust pipe.
Rusty.
Flaky.
Looked like it had been dragged up the beach at Muriwai and left there for ten years.
I pull the trigger.
Nothing.
Tap the torch on it.
Nothing.
Swear a bit.
Still nothing.
So I do what any bloke does.
Grab the grinder.
Lie there with sparks raining down my sleeves.
Grind a shiny little patch.
Try again.
It fires.
Move two centimetres.
Stops again.
Back to the grinder.
At that point I’m lying there thinking:
“There is no way this is how plasma cutters are meant to work.”
That was the day I learnt about pilot arc.
Scratch Start = Old School and Annoying
Scratch start is exactly what it sounds like.
You physically touch the tip on the metal to start the arc.
No clean contact.
No arc.
Simple.
Which means:
Rust stops it.
Paint stops it.
Scale stops it. Galv stops it.
On clean plate sitting on a bench, scratch start is fine.
Out in the real world?
On farm gear.
Old trailers.
Exhaust pipes.
Random scrap in the corner of the shed.
It becomes a pain in the arse real quick.
Pilot Arc = Pull Trigger, Start Cutting
Pilot arc is different.
Inside the torch, the machine creates a little arc on its own.
That little arc jumps out and finds the metal.
You don’t have to touch.
You don’t have to scratch.
You don’t have to grind a shiny spot first.
You pull the trigger.
It starts.
That’s it.
Once you use pilot arc, scratch start feels prehistoric.
Why This Actually Matters in NZ Sheds
Most of us aren’t cutting brand-new laser-clean steel.
We’re cutting:
Rusty stuff
Painted stuff
Greasy stuff
Stuff that’s been sitting outside in Whangārei, Tauranga, Levin or Gore for years
Pilot arc doesn’t care.
Scratch start throws a tantrum.
That’s the difference.
Expanded Mesh Will Break Your Spirit
Ever tried cutting expanded mesh with scratch start?
Arc starts.
Hits a gap.
Dies.
Starts.
Dies.
Starts.
Dies.
You end up wanting to throw the torch across the shed.
Pilot arc stays lit even when the torch crosses gaps.
If you cut ramps, grates, guards, cages or mesh…
Pilot arc saves your sanity.
Does Pilot Arc Make It Cut Thicker?
No.
Let’s kill that myth now.
Pilot arc does NOT increase cutting thickness.
Amps control thickness.
Power input controls thickness.
Machine design controls thickness.
Pilot arc only changes how the arc starts.
Not how deep it cuts.
Does It Make Cuts Cleaner?
Also no.
Once the arc is going, both machines cut the same.
Same kerf.
Same speed.
Same edge quality.
Pilot arc just gets you there without drama.
Why So Many Cheap Machines Have Pilot Arc Now
Because electronics got better.
What used to be expensive is now normal.
That’s a good thing.
It means beginners get decent gear without selling a kidney.
Ten years ago you paid big money for pilot arc.
Now it’s standard.
When Scratch Start Still Makes Sense
If you:
Only cut clean new steel
Only work on a bench
Never touch rusty junk
Want absolute cheapest
Scratch start will do the job.
Just don’t pretend it’s as nice to live with.
The Biggest Mistake People Make
They compare:
Brand
Amps
Price
They never check arc start type.
Then they wonder why their machine feels useless on rusty steel.
Five minutes of reading saves a lot of swearing later.
My Simple Rule
If you’re buying today:
Get pilot arc.
Unless scratch start is massively cheaper.
Even then…
I’d still lean pilot arc.
Life’s too short to be grinding rust just to make your plasma cutter fire.
Looking Back
If I could go back and talk to younger me:
“Stop being tight on the arc start.”
Because lying under a car, sparks in your face, just to make a plasma cutter start…
Is dumb.
Pilot arc exists for a reason.
And once you use it, you’ll never willingly go back.
