Own a Weld Pro Plasma Cutter?

Many Weld Pro plasma cutters use common imported torch styles, but the machine name alone won't tell you which consumables fit. The torch itself usually provides the answer.

In this video I compare several popular plasma torch designs and show how to identify them before ordering replacement tips, electrodes or other consumable parts.

You bought a Weldpro.

You’ve burned through your first set of tips.

Now you’re on Google typing: “Weldpro plasma cutter tips NZ”

And everything looks the same.

Some say 50 amp.

Some say 60 amp.

Some say pilot arc.

Some don’t say much at all.

Here’s what actually matters:

Weldpro doesn’t decide your consumables.

The torch does.

Before You Waste Money

You don’t buy “Weldpro tips.”

You buy the torch family hanging off the front of the machine.

Most Weldpro plasma cutters in NZ run one of two torch styles:

• PT31 / LG40 (scratch start)

• AG60 (pilot arc)

The 30-Second Shed Test

Forget the manual.

Just unscrew the front of your torch and look at the parts. If the tip pushes in and the electrode is double-ended…

You’ve got PT31 / LG40.

Cheap.

Simple.

Common as anything in NZ.

If the electrode screws in

and the tip also screws in…

You’ve got AG60.

That’s pilot arc.

Different parts.

Not interchangeable.

I’ve seen blokes try forcing them.

Doesn’t end well.

Why This Confuses So Many Weldpro Owners

Because when you buy the machine, the marketing talks about:

• 50 amp

• Clean cut thickness

• Dual voltage

It barely mentions the torch style.

So when it’s time to replace consumables, you search the brand.

Instead of checking what’s actually in your hand.

I made that mistake early on. Ordered “50 amp plasma tips.”

Didn’t fit.

Waited a week.

Swore a bit.

Ordered again.

Lesson learned.

What Most Weldpro Machines in NZ Actually Use

From what I’ve seen around NZ workshops — Christchurch, Waikato, down south — most of the smaller Weldpro units are running PT31 / LG40.

Especially the 40–50 amp scratch-start machines.

If your torch needs to touch the steel to fire…

It’s almost certainly PT31. If it fires without touching… You’re likely on AG60.

That’s your dividing line.

Where People Still Stuff It Up

Even once they identify PT31, a lot of Weldpro owners just buy the cheapest bulk pack they can find.

Yes, they fit.

But not all PT31 consumables are created equal.

Some tips are soft copper and erode fast.

Some electrodes pit early.

Some swirl rings are moulded rough and mess with the arc.

Then you start thinking:

“Why am I blowing through tips so fast?”

“Is my machine dying?” Usually it’s not the machine.

It’s rubbish consumables.

Identify the torch.

Buy accordingly.

There’s nothing worse than:

Steel clamped.

Compressor humming.

Trigger pulled.

And realising you ordered the wrong bloody parts.

Save yourself the second order and the waiting around.
