Burnt plasma cutter tips and electrodes on dirty metal bench

If You’re Blowing Through Tips, Something’s Wrong

If you’re blowing through plasma cutter tips like they’re lollies at the dairy, something’s up.

And most of the time?

It’s not the machine.

It’s not the brand.

It’s not that the thing’s “Chinese junk”.

It’s what you’re doing with it.

Ask me how I know.

When I first started cutting steel, I honestly thought tips were meant to last about five minutes.

Cut something.

Tip dead.

Change it. Carry on.

I went through three tips in under five minutes once and didn’t even finish the cut.

I remember standing there in the shed thinking:

“This thing’s a piece of crap.”

It wasn’t.

I was.

You’re Not Giving the Sparks Anywhere to Go

This is the big one.

Plasma doesn’t just melt steel.

It melts it and blasts it out the bottom.

If you try and punch straight down through thick plate with nowhere for that molten metal to escape…

It comes straight back up.

Into the tip.

Into the electrode.

Sometimes into your face.

And yes — that bloody hurts.

That blowback:

● Eats the tip orifice

● Chews the electrode

● Wrecks the swirl ring

● Turns a brand-new set into scrap in seconds

If sparks aren’t coming out the bottom cleanly, you’re feeding molten steel back into the torch.

Fix:

Start from the edge.

Angle the torch slightly.

Wait until sparks are clearly exiting underneath. Then straighten up.

Sparks flying downward from plasma cut

You’re Treating Piercing Like Normal Cutting

Piercing is brutal.

Cutting along an edge? Easy.

Standing in the middle of thick plate and trying to blast straight through it on a small machine?

That’s consumable suicide.

Options:

● Drill a pilot hole

● Start from an edge

● Or accept you’re pushing the machine

How Thick Can a 50 Amp Plasma Cutter Actually Cut?

Torch Height — Stop Mixing This Up

Handheld plasma torch hovering above steel

Pilot arc torch → small gap.

Scratch start torch → needs contact.

Mix that up and you’ll fight the machine all day.

You’re Running Full Noise on Everything

3mm sheet at full amps?

All you’re doing is cooking tips.

Match amps to thickness.

Your Air Setup Is Rubbish

Air compressor with moisture trap

Bad air kills consumables.

Moisture.

Pressure drop.

Tiny compressors.

All bad.

Long, Skinny Extension Leads

Long extension lead to plasma cutter

Voltage drop.

Weak arc.

Short heavy lead = better cuts.

Some Consumables Are Just Junk

Plasma consumables laid out

Not all consumables are equal.

Good parts last longer.

Simple.

You’re Treating It Like a Grinder

Plasma isn’t brute force.

Smooth and steady wins.

You’re Expecting Too Much from a Small Machine

Small machine + thick steel = dead tips.

Physics.

My Big Realisation

Start from the edge.

Angle slightly.

Let sparks exit.

Tip life doubles.

Final Answer

Worn vs new consumables side by side

So why are your plasma cutter tips burning out so bloody fast?

Because:

● Piercing wrong

● No escape path ● Too many amps

● Bad air

● Voltage drop

● Junk consumables

● Machine pushed too hard

Fix those and tips last way longer.
