I remember the first time I used a plasma cutter.

Up until that day, I was one of those blokes who used an angle grinder for bloody everything.

Kerf just means how wide the cut is.

Angle grinder discs are thick compared to a plasma arc.

Thicker disc means:

More material removed.

Wider cuts.

Less precision.

A plasma cutter has a much thinner kerf.

Less metal disappears.

Cuts are tighter.

That matters when you’re making brackets or parts that actually need to fit.

With a grinder, cutting is only half the job.

Then you:

Clean the edge.

Knock off burrs.

Straighten wobbles. Fix overcuts.

With plasma, especially on thinner steel, the edge is cleaner to start with.

You still tidy things up.

But nowhere near the same level of cleanup.

That alone saves time.

Angle Grinders Still Have a Place

Let’s be clear.

Grinders are still brilliant tools.

They’re good at:

Grinding welds

Sanding

Cleaning rust

Cutting bolts off Shaping

A plasma cutter doesn’t replace a grinder.

It replaces the cutting part of what grinders are bad at.

You still need both.

The Consumables Thing (Not as Scary as It Sounds)

Most 40–50 amp home machines use common torch styles with cheap consumables.

You can buy big consumable kits for roughly what a handful of decent cutting discs cost.

And if your air is clean and you’re not abusing the torch, they last well.

Important part:

Generic torch = cheap consumables.

Proprietary torch = expensive consumables.
